PO1 Center of Excellence for Research on Arthritis and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract

Arthritis and related musculoskeletal disorders continue to be one of the major causes of disability in the US. In the past decade the percentage of arthritis sufferers that have sought various complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for their chronic condition has significantly increased. Despite the common application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) modalities as an alternative treatment for arthritis, the mechanisms of TCM action and its safety and effectiveness remain speculative.

The primary objective of this proposal is to establish a Center for research in CAM that is focused on arthritis and TCM. The proposed program will expand upon the work that has already been accomplished by the Center for Alternative Medicine Research of Arthritis, the NIH funded program P50 AT00084.

The proposal contains three projects and three supporting cores. The three projects will examine the safety, efficacy and mechanism of action associated with common TCM treatments, acupuncture and herbs, for arthritis.
